Frequently Asked Question: “I know I should try to buy organic whenever I can, but it can get so expensive! What is your advice on buying organic produce?”
I get this question a lot, and I agree that there are times that I leave the market with that sinking feeling that I have spent way too much on my produce. What gives me some relief is that the foods I am providing to my family are safer to eat, and usually taste better. But, there are definitely ways to navigate the organic market so that your wallet doesn’t suffer so much.
The Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org/foodnews) puts out lists that will help guide you when making your organic produce purchases. Get to know the “Dirty Dozen”, which includes fruits and vegetables that you should definitely buy in organic form due to the large amount of pesticides used to grow the conventional forms, and the “Clean Fifteen”, which had little to no traces of pesticides when tested. I’ve provided a list for these below. You can also download the group’s free app “Dirty Dozen” so that you have the list with you when you hit the market!
